3 Questions to Ask When Making a Decision

question

Now that I have a teenage daughter I spend a lot of time making decisions … tuff parenting decisions.

I pray for wisdom and discernment just about hourly these days. Because I’m a bit of a control freak at times, it’s hard for me to release my tight grip from my “take charge know it all attitude”. And then before I know it I’ve made a bad decision based on my controlling ways that usually end up backfiring on me.

Have you ever had that happen?

Just yesterday when I was working with a client I had an epiphany. I asked her three questions that guided her into making a confident and firm decision.

After our meeting I thought wow I need to answer these questions for myself because I was feeling slightly stressed about yet another parenting decision. So I took out a piece of paper and wrote down the following 3 questions:

• Does your decision align with God’s word?
• Do you have confusion about your decision?
• Do you have peace about your decision?

Answering those questions made it clear to me that I did not need to move forward at this time in making a decision. Instead I needed to slow down and continue to seek God for guidance.

Often we rush into making decisions. We feel pressure to hurry up and keep moving. Let’s face it we live in a fast paced world and instant gratification has almost become a necessity.

Today I want to encourage you to slow down and ask yourself these 3 questions before making your next decision. It really works great for any decision you are making.

I would love to hear from you. What decisions are you wrestling with. Leave comment below.

  1. Wow those are three powerful questions. I am always rushing into things and not waiting for the answer. I ask, but then sometimes run ahead. Thanks for reminding me to check for the assurance it is God’s will, not confusing, and that there is peace before making that decision. Thanks!

  2. What a great read. I would love to get that book. I struggle with so much daily concerning my health and my oldest daughter going off to college next fall.

    • Halona, Praying for you today. Begin speaking and claiming God’s truth, His confidence over your health and daughter. Thank you for sharing.

  3. So insightful! I often feel like I rush to make decsion so I can gain the Peace and clarity I desire. I forget that when God truly guides your decisions you have His peace and wisdom in the process as well.

    • Hi Joline! It’s something I must remember daily. Let the peace of Christ rule in your heart and be thankful. Colossians 3:15 I’m clinging to this verse a lot lately. Thanks for commenting.

  4. Thinking about the 3 questions makes me think of what is on my heart. When we downsized some 7 years ago to move we wound up in No. AR where my husband’s sister lived. These 7 years have passed quickly. With her passing it makes you realize how short life is and how important family is. My daughter moved 70 miles from where we’re at and I’d like to move there. She wants to have a baby and we would love to be grandparents. With our other grandchild we never got to be around her. I would move tomorrow but I know we have to wait and see if that’s what the Lord wants us to do?

  5. That’s interesting..I’m past the point of children at home. Now I weigh my comments or even if I should make one–about THEIR decisions, Ex: is it helpful, is it necessary, etc. I would love to win the book. I need confidence–my heart gets discouraged.

    • Boy this parenting job never ends! Even after they are grown we will continue to wrestle with things. Prayer….prayer….and more prayer will be our number one job as parents it seems. Thank you for sharing Latrelle.

  6. I am trying to make decisions to make our family life more sane. I feel overwhelmed so often and yet have been trying to simplify and just don’t know what else can be cut out at this point….

    • Hi Leslie, I’m praying for you. Colossians 3:15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your heart and be thankful. It’s hard to step into, live and walk in peace. I find when I seek God in deep intentional prayer His peace overflows. Thank you for sharing.
