Miss Cranky Pants

misscrankypants.jpg

As I sat on my porch listening to the birds chirping I was savoring God and His creation. I spent a good bit of time talking with Him, praying and reading the bible.

Leaving my quiet time I felt motivated.  A sense of peace lingered within knowing that God would order my steps for the day.

As I began working, everything seemed to be running smoothly. It appeared to be a typical work day.

And out of nowhere, the next thing you know, I became Miss Cranky Pants!

I started feeling grumpy, irritable and anxious for NO REASON at all!

Has this ever happened to you? (I hope so; otherwise you’re probably thinking I’m a little crazy!)

I couldn’t figure out what in the heck was wrong with me.

Was I hormonal? I don’t know.

Was I tired? Maybe.

Mad at my husband? A little.

But was that enough to warrant my day going from spirit filled to grumpy and down right dreadful?

As I shuffled around my office, I could tell I was getting crankier by the minute. My first thought was this is going to be a rotten day.  Which led to poor pitiful me, why does everything have to be a struggle, to….I’m actually too embarrassed to tell you everything I was thinking, but you get the point.

After about half an hour of this mental anguish, I stopped dead in my tracks.

Something deep inside of me stirred and immediately I made a U-turn in my day.

I made an intentional decision to go back to where I started my day, seeking God.

Quickly I grabbed my cell phone, put on a Joyce Meyer podcast and before I knew it, I was back on track! I was excited about my day and experiencing God’s peace once again.

Isn’t it strange how are moods and thoughts can fluctuate within minutes? How it only take one negative thought to derail us.

I open up my thought life in hopes that you will feel encouraged knowing that you are not alone in the Battlefield of the Mind. When you go from life is great to feeling miserable within minutes, it doesn’t mean you are crazy!

What it means is that the enemy will do anything to throw you off course. It is up to you how your day will go and what you will allow your mind to think on.

What will you do the next time you find yourself becoming Miss Cranky Pants? Will you allow the enemy to stay in your mind or will you kick him out? I love hearing from you, leave a comment below.

How to turn that frown upside down in 5 minutes or less

girlslaugh.jpg

Over the past few weeks, I’ve tried a little experiment that literally turned my frowns upside down within minutes.

Every time I found myself feeling a little discouraged in my day, I intentionally stopped what I was doing, reached for my phone and called someone to lift them up.

Most of the time I would get a voicemail, but instead of hanging up I left them a heartfelt message encouraging them and flattering them with oodles of love.

I was AMAZED at the results!

I immediately felt like a brand new person!

I felt happy, hopeful, and down right ECSTATIC!!

Will you try this experiment today? Leave a comment below and let me know how it works for you.

I currently have a waiting list, however I have a few appointments opening up in late April. I want to encourage you that there is hope and a new way of life through Christian coaching. ((hugs))

What’s your red flag telling you?

redflag3

Do you ever find yourself doing one thing but deep down inside you really can’t stand what you’re doing?

For example, eating junk food when you know you need to lose weight to get into your summer clothes or giving advice when you know you really just need to keep quiet and listen.

When I find myself in these wishy-washy emotions that’s a big red flag for me!

My life has the potential to spiral quickly into unhealthy places, physically, mentally and spiritually.

And I don’t know about you, but for me when my life is out of balance watch out world because I become a hot mess!

So what can we do to keep our sanity so that we don’t become a hot mess?

How can we consistently live the life we really want to live? You know the life that is full of the fruits of the spirit…love, peace, joy, patience, kindness, gentleness and self-control.

For starters, get rid of the idea that we will ever do anything perfectly or exactly as planned because that’s just not reality. No matter what we plan, every single day will guarantee us a curve ball to throw us off-balance.

Secondly it’s quite simple, Just Show Up.

That’s it.

All we really have to do is simply seek God each and every day and He will do the rest. He will provide all the sanity and balance we could ever wish for.

Matthew 7:7-8 Jesus says, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.”

It takes one simple action, one simple effort on our part.

Just Show Up.

When we do our part and pursue the Lord, He will do the rest. Life as you know it will transform into a steady consistent balance without all the chaos.

How different will your life be when you Just Show Up? Leave a comment below.

How 3 Words Changed My Life

marrygoround.jpg

For years, I felt heavy, as if I was wearing one of those vests they put on you at the dentist office when they take x-rays. Pressure weighed me down.

I couldn’t figure out why life was so hard for me.

Have you ever felt like you were struggling to make it through the day?

I know I have.

Many, many times I’ve fought off depression, anxiety, fear, doubt, worry, insecurity and the next thing I knew, I’d be drowning in hopelessness.

As “Christians” sometimes we end up feeling like we’re defective or flawed because we aren’t like all the other Christians that seem to have it all together. We feel like why in the heck is this “Christian” thing not working for me like it is for those other people we see plastered all over social media?

One night, about a year ago I woke up from a dead sleep and found the answer to why I had been anxiously struggling day in and day out with life.

Three little words popped in my mind, JUST LIVE TODAY.

You would think after living with cancer, chemotherapy, life support, and being faced with never walking or breathing again on my own that I would have really understood the concept of living one day at a time. Out of all people, someone who’s kissed the face of death and has this incredible second chance at life, surely I lived life to it’s fullest, cherishing every moment, every breath?

Unfortunately, I did not.

You might be scratching your head and asking me why, right about now? The reason why is because in my mind I lived in the past consumed with regrets and fears or I live in the future of what ifs.

My mind was like a marry-go-round, spinning round and round in the past or the future. It never stopped to rest in the present.

Once I began to truly Just Live Today by intentionally disciplining myself to keep my mind focused only on the 24-hours at hand, I felt light and free, almost as if I could truly breath again. It was not easy work but you know the old saying practice pays off.

Today I can honestly say that I truly Just Live Today, one 24-hours at a time. I cherish life. Gratitude consumes my day.

So how about you? Where does your mind stay? Does the past consume you? Does the future taunt you? Does the present scare you?

What would your life look like if you simply stopped the marry-go-round in your mind and JUST LIVE TODAY?

I would love to hear from you in the comments below.

If you are struggling with the inability to just live today, contact me for coaching. I currently have a waiting list, however I have a few appointments opening up in mid April. I want to encourage you that there is hope and a new way of life. ((hugs))

Just a note…

snowHi Friends,

I wanted to let you know that I’m currently working on some new projects and will be posting sporadically for a short time.

We are snowed in here and I’m loving this down time snuggling up by the fire with my dogs.

Hope you all are doing well and enjoying the winter.  ((hugs))

I’m not alone in this…

What words of encouragement do you need to hear when you’re having a bad day?

What I would like to hear is, it’s ok to eat that candy bar or pizza, but really that’s not going to help me.

The words I really need to hear are words of compassion, not only from someone else, but from myself. Words like, you’re not alone in this, everyone struggles, or would you consider offering yourself some compassion in this moment?

This month I’m focusing on self-compassion on my blog. After asking my friends on Facebook on a scale from 1 – 10 how hard are you on yourself? 10 being extremely hard, the response I received was incredible. Everyone is so hard on themselves. Friends, we are not alone in this.

I invite you on my blog and to follow me on social media at #mycompassioncoach as we learn and practice self-compassion together. Will you join me?

A Sweet Place of Breakthrough

deskartjournal

If I could reach through the computer screen I’d give you the biggest (((HUG))) and thank you for joining me on this inspiring journey of practicing COURAGE this month!

As I was sitting at my desk thinking about writing today’s post, I looked down and noticed my art journal I’ve been using for an online class I’m taking with Brene Brown. (Side note: I love her and all of her books!)

I couldn’t help myself, I have to share with you one of the coolest things I think I’ve done in quite some time.

One afternoon a few weeks ago, I was a little fidgety and I had this sense that I really wanted to do something fun, like create, paint or draw…

Because I’m not artistic in that way, like my daughter, I usually ignore those fleeting thoughts and do something “more productive”. You know like cleaning out my kitchen cabinets, folding laundry, vacuuming the floors, grocery shopping. I mean who has time to sit around and create a useless piece of art when so many things have to get done?

However, because of all this COURAGE talk we’ve had going on this month, I took a deep breath and thought to myself, Linda, this is an opportunity to practice courage. Are you going to do it?

And then I felt that uncomfortable feeling in the pit of my stomach.

A siren went off in my head.

COURAGE ALERT! COURAGE ALERT! MUST ACT NOW!!

In that moment, I made an intentional decision and pushed through the resistance. I was brave. I asked my husband and daughter if they would like to join me in the dining room to create something. I had no agenda; I just wanted to use my watercolors, markers and journal.

And to my surprise, they both curiously looked at me and nodded their heads yes!

The three of us gathered around the table and spent about half an hour or so randomly creating things. I loved being with my family doing something creative. The only time we ever do this kind of thing is on a half-to basis, like school projects.

You want to know the absolute best part about this?

The way it made me feel!

I felt HAPPY…. ALIVE…FULL…. PEACEFUL…. CONTENT.

Looking back, I believe that was the day COURAGE led me to a sweet place of breakthrough.

You are not alone…

We are the most connected world yet the most isolated because of social media.

It’s hard to have that personal intimate connection when you meet over the internet, unlike meeting with someone face-to-face.

In my quiet time this morning I was reading Matthew 28:20 “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” This scripture brings me so much comfort to know whenever I’m feeling alone, Christ is with me, the Holy Spirit is always with me and I am never alone.

We’ve been talking about courage all month and I have to say it takes COURAGE to truly believe the word of God. I want to encourage you to spend some time with scripture and connect with God today. I love hearing from you! Leave a comment below.
