Are “they” Really That Important?

girlinfield

What will “they” think?

Will “they” like me?

Will “they” approve of me?

Will “they” reject me?

Will “they” love me?

Will “they” hate me?

Will “they” agree with me?

Will “they” disagree with me?

“They” can keep me up at night, tossing and turning, trying to figure out what “they” think.

Every time that darn insecurity bug bites me it sends me into the crazy land of “they”.

Obsessing over what “they” think about me.

Have you ever struggled with such ridiculous thinking?

A few weeks ago when I was talking with my therapist (and yes I have a therapist and a life coach … there’s a big difference between the two) I came up with a great idea on how to protect myself from being consumed with “they”, aka other people’s opinions about me.

Sitting on her big comfy couch my therapist asked me to describe who I was. Not who everyone else says I am, but who I truly am as a 40-year old woman.

As tears trickled down my cheeks I could feel myself becoming lighter, more vibrate, and full of life as I expressed the beautiful unique person that God created.

I am compassionate, loving, strong, courageous, beautiful, giving …

As I expressed the truth from my heart I envisioned all the opinions of others bouncing off of me.

All opinions, all words … good, bad, indifferent, kind, mean, shocking, thoughtful …. None of the words were able to land on me. They just bounced off of me.

Instead of allowing those words to penetrate my soul and take root, I was filled with who God says I am, the absolute pure truth.

I decided that day that those are the only words that are allowed to consume me. I don’t need words to puff my ego up and tell me how good I am and I certainly don’t need words to tear me down.

Now I’m not saying we should not receive words of love and compassion from others. By all means we are made for relationship and expressing thoughtful words to one another. This is part of the beautiful gift of life we live.

What I am saying is that we must guard our hearts before allowing anything to come in. Make sure the words that are spoken align with who God says we are before opening ourselves up to every thought, word, or opinion that comes our way.

Proverbs 4:32 says it beautifully, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it”.

Have you struggled with opinions from others before? I would love to hear from you in the comments below. Everyone who comments will be entered to WIN a special devotional book from Lysa TerKeurst, What Happens When Women Say Yes to God. Winner announced Feb. 28.

Journal with God: Write in your journal all the words that have been hurting your heart. Maybe even the people who have said those words to you. Then ask God to reveal His truth to you. Write down who God says’ you are, the beautiful truth.

Reaching for God Instead of Food {and a Giveaway}

Life doesn’t have to be chaotic when uncertainty arises.

I want to share with you my experience of walking through a recent health scare. As you can imagine when a doctor is concerned with my health it frightens me because of going through cancer and a near death experience several years back.

But I was amazed at how I managed to have God’s supernatural peace while life felt pretty chaotic when I thought I might be sick again!

Philippians 4:6-7 tells us, Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

This passage took root in my life and literally gave me supernatural peace and strength as I waited several days on test results. I believe the reason I was able to experience God’s peace that surpasses all understanding is because of two reasons:

  1. God is God and He can do anything!
  2. Because I did not run to food to comfort or numb myself from feeling so afraid.

Running to food is a normal reaction when I’m feeling scared. Because I was not overloaded with sugar I was able to experience God’s peace on a much deeper level than ever before.

If you struggle with reaching for something other than God when you’re feeling afraid, I want to encourage you to stop and seek God’s presence before running to food, shopping, work, friends …

I would love to hear what things you might run to before seeking God first. Everyone who comments will be entered to WIN a special devotional book from Lysa TerKeurst, What Happens When Women Say Yes to God. Winner announced Feb. 28.

How Your Core Values Keep You Accountable {and a giveaway!}

It’s so exciting to see how great everyone is doing on accountability this month. I love hearing from you. Thank you for all your emails. Your motivation keeps me motivated!

On a recent blog post I wrote, “Accountability oozes from our core values”. For example one of my core values is honesty. Because honesty is a core value of mine, when I tell someone I will do something, that means I will do it. That is why accountability works when it’s connected to my core values.

There are hundreds of core values. I would love to hear what your core values are in the comments below. Everyone who comments will be entered to WIN a special devotional book from Lysa TerKeurst, What Happens When Women Say Yes to God. Winner announced Feb. 28.

Here’s a list of core values to select from (but not limited to): Love, Obedience, Patience, Quality, Security, Inspiring Others, Family, Accomplishment, Trust, Recognition, Peace, Mentoring, Wellness, Loyalty, Service, Honesty, Humor, Integrity, Faith, Fun, Respect, Persistence, Community, Creativity, Encouragement, Order, Nurturing, Excellence, Courage, Honor, Joy, Authenticity, Elegance.

Journal with God: Write in your journal all of your core values. Reflect on the many ways God has used these values throughout your life as a gift to you and to serve others.

One Easy Way to Finish What You Started

We are talking accountability. How can we set those goals, follow through and achieve them? One sure way to do it is by staying accountable.

What are some different ways to stay accountable?

1 Thessalonians 5:11 tells us, therefore encourage one another and build one another up.

One really fun way to stay accountable is by speaking into another’s life by encouraging, motivating and inspiring them. And guess what it does for you? Internally it motivates you to stay on course. It works like a charm.

Who will you encourage today?  Everyone who comments will be entered to WIN a special devotional book from Lysa TerKeurst, What Happens When Women Say Yes to God. yestogoddevot

How I Used Being Embarrassed To My Advantage

embarrass

Hot flushed face. Sweaty palms. Shaky voice. Embarrassment.

We’ve all been there. Whether we did it to ourselves or someone else is to blame.

Isn’t it the worst?

We do everything in our power to avoid feeling embarrassed. Whether it’s making sure we are not the only one walking into the party alone or giving excuses as to why Susie Q is dressed the way she is.

Just thinking about being embarrassed for half a second makes my stomach churn.

But what if we could use embarrassment to our advantage?

When I was training for my very first half-marathon with Team In Training, I learned how embarrassment could actually become my friend instead of that dreadful nemesis.

I was committed to raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphomas Society so I asked for donations from all my friends and family to support me.

After sending out a ton of letters I realized there was no turning back. I was stuck! I had to follow through with my commitment; otherwise I was going to be completely embarrassed.

No matter how tuff training got I refused to give up. People had donated money to support me. My hands were tied. There was no way, no how I was going to be a quitter. I wanted to honor my word and of course their money!

By putting myself out there, to the point of embarrassment actually worked to my advantage. It kept me motivated. It kept me accountable. And procrastination was nowhere on the radar.

From this experience I learned a simple tool that keeps me accountable today.

Social accountability.

When I really want to achieve a goal, I will put myself out there every time. I will announce it to the world, even though it makes me want to throw up at first!

But hey, it works! It keeps me accountable.

Social accountability pushes me out of my comfort zone and soaring into great results.

I want to challenge you today friend.

What goal are you ready to achieve? You know the one that makes you a little queasy when you think about it.

I’d love to hear about it. Everyone who comments will be entered to WIN a special devotional book from Lysa TerKeurst, What Happens When Women Say Yes to God.

How a 40-Day Juice Fast Trained Me to Write a Book

A few years ago in my quiet time I felt the Lord speaking to me and said I needed to do a 40 day juice fast. I had never fasted before in my life. I told God there was no way I could do it. It was too much. No food, just juice? This sounded crazy!

At the time He was speaking to my heart about writing a book and in preparation for this book I needed to honor what He was asking of me. Luke 16:10 came to mind “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much. Whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.”

Today I’m thrilled to share with you that I did write the book. I believe because of walking in obedience and being faithful with the small things (such as food) God taught me how to follow through so that I could complete such a large assignment … writing a book.

What is God asking you to give to Him? What little thing is He asking you to trust Him with? Leave a comment. I would love to pray for you.

Journal with God: Write Luke 16:10 in your journal and share with God what little thing you will trust Him with today.

What’s Respect Got To Do With Healthy Eating?

In my blog post 7 Simple Truths to Accountability {that will hit you in the gut} Simple Truth 3 states: Accountability shows respect towards others, and you are honoring yourself with self-respect when exercising accountability.

Why is it so important to respect yourself?

Over the years I’ve learned that you cannot give away what you do not have. So the more you respect yourself, the more respect you can give away to others.

One of my core values is to respect God first. Romans 12:1 tells us to offer our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God. This is your spiritual act of worship.

So how do we offer ourselves as living sacrifices? One way I’ve learned how to do that is by eating healthy, exercising and taking care of myself. This is honoring to God. I don’t claim to do it perfectly. Many times I mess it all up. But then there are days when I seem to get it right.

My prayer today is that each one of us would have a deep longing desire to respect God first with our lives. Leave a comment and share how you will honor God with your life today?

7 Simple Truths to Accountability {that will hit you in the gut}

Almost five years ago I learned one of the most valuable lesson of my life.

Every time I think about it I almost have to catch my breath. This lesson lives within the central core of my beliefs, deep in my heart, permanently etched on my mind.

Just five months fresh off of life support and three months out of radiation I joined Team In Training with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to run my very first half marathon. It was thrilling to think about getting my body back into shape after the hell it had been through the previous year with chemotherapy, antibiotics, steroids, paralytics, and many more drugs.

I had no idea how in the world I was going to achieve such an enormous goal, 13.1 miles. But looking back I now see the unique thread that brought this dream of mine to fruition.

accountability

I did not understand then what I am fully aware of now.

Accountability works!

Anytime I set out to achieve a goal or even the slightest lifestyle change, the guaranteed formula for a successful result is staying accountable!

Here are 7 Simple Truths to Accountability that will give you a little gut check on why we must invest in accountability.

1) If we want to grow and make a lasting difference in our life we must maintain accountability. It is vital.

2) Accountability means showing up for yourself – living your best possible life right now, today!

3) Accountability shows respect towards others, and you are honoring yourself with self-respect when exercising accountability.

4) Accountability oozes from your core values, your character. Integrity. Honesty. Beliefs. Truths. Standards.

5) Accountability means you are stepping up to the plate and taking responsibility for yourself. There’s no more room for excuses, for blame or for a lack of better words laziness.

6) We are accountable for how we spend our time. We all get 24 hours a day, no one gets more, and no one gets less. It’s our choice how we choose to spend it.

7) And finally accountability and procrastination do not occupy the same space. Which one do you choose to partner with?

Starting February 1st I am offering a FREE 28 Day Accountability Group. This group will be a small community to support and encourage one another.
