The Secret to Reaching Your Goals in 2015

0001WI

As we are approaching the end of 2014 you might be saying next year “I’ll do better”

Better at….

Exercising

Spending time with God

Eating Healthy

Going to church

Getting organized

Managing my finances

Building my business

Making a career change

Studying the bible

Fill in the blank_____________

But year after year we manage to fall into the same old routine and never really change.

One thing I know for certain is when you are ready to make a change in your life you MUST have accountability.

I remember four years ago {before becoming a Christian Life Coach} I set out for the biggest goal of my life … to run a half marathon 13.1 miles.

Just fresh out of chemotherapy, a coma, life support and radiation this was a pretty crazy and audacious goal.

I wasn’t sure if I really could go through with it, if I really could run 13.1 miles. I was afraid to set such a goal and believe I could do it.

Have you ever been afraid to set a big goal?

As the training began I had two necessary components to insure my success, a coach and accountability.

My coach came along side me and believed in me more than I believed in myself, especially on those days when I was ready to throw in the towel. My coach challenged me to dig deep within myself and connect to my inner strength. My coach encouraged me every time I hit the pavement to give it all I had. But the most important gift my coach gave me was accountability.

Accountability is the secret sauce to success.

Because of my coach and being accountable to someone other than myself I crossed the 13.1-mile finish line on September 5, 2010. A huge victory!

Because of my personal experience in training for my half marathon I discovered the deepest desire of my heart … coaching. Today it is a privilege to serve women around the world as I coach them in achieving their goals. I love my work!

Whether you already have a goal in mind or you’re afraid to even set a goal I want to stretch you today. Dig deep.

What is that one goal you wish more than anything to achieve next year?

How 3 Words Changed My Life

marrygoround.jpg

For years, I felt heavy, as if I was wearing one of those vests they put on you at the dentist office when they take x-rays. Pressure weighed me down.

I couldn’t figure out why life was so hard for me.

Have you ever felt like you were struggling to make it through the day?

I know I have.

Many, many times I’ve fought off depression, anxiety, fear, doubt, worry, insecurity and the next thing I knew, I’d be drowning in hopelessness.

As “Christians” sometimes we end up feeling like we’re defective or flawed because we aren’t like all the other Christians that seem to have it all together. We feel like why in the heck is this “Christian” thing not working for me like it is for those other people we see plastered all over social media?

One night, about a year ago I woke up from a dead sleep and found the answer to why I had been anxiously struggling day in and day out with life.

Three little words popped in my mind, JUST LIVE TODAY.

You would think after living with cancer, chemotherapy, life support, and being faced with never walking or breathing again on my own that I would have really understood the concept of living one day at a time. Out of all people, someone who’s kissed the face of death and has this incredible second chance at life, surely I lived life to it’s fullest, cherishing every moment, every breath?

Unfortunately, I did not.

You might be scratching your head and asking me why, right about now? The reason why is because in my mind I lived in the past consumed with regrets and fears or I live in the future of what ifs.

My mind was like a marry-go-round, spinning round and round in the past or the future. It never stopped to rest in the present.

Once I began to truly Just Live Today by intentionally disciplining myself to keep my mind focused only on the 24-hours at hand, I felt light and free, almost as if I could truly breath again. It was not easy work but you know the old saying practice pays off.

Today I can honestly say that I truly Just Live Today, one 24-hours at a time. I cherish life. Gratitude consumes my day.

So how about you? Where does your mind stay? Does the past consume you? Does the future taunt you? Does the present scare you?

What would your life look like if you simply stopped the marry-go-round in your mind and JUST LIVE TODAY?

I would love to hear from you in the comments below.

If you are struggling with the inability to just live today, contact me for coaching. I currently have a waiting list, however I have a few appointments opening up in mid April. I want to encourage you that there is hope and a new way of life. ((hugs))

Chasing Extraordinary

embraceordinary

As a Christian Life Coach I spend a lot of time listening. My clients amaze me with their courage and bravery, as they are completely authentic with me. Often times I pinch myself because I get to do the work I love.

I’ve noticed over the past few years a common underlying theme that is generally unspoken. And before I share this with you, I’ll go ahead and confess, I have lived 95% or more of my life this way too.

We are living our lives chasing the extraordinary instead of embracing the ordinary.

I believe we live in a state of fear that we will never be “good enough” or “important enough” because we are chasing the extraordinary. Truth is the extraordinary is rare. I’m not trying to be negative here, but honestly the majority of our days, hours and minutes are filled with the ordinary. For example, washing dishes, paying bills, grocery shopping, driving to work…

After thinking about embracing the ordinary, I really couldn’t get excited. Truth is I really do not like washing dishes or grocery shopping. No matter how many times I try to convince myself to see the positive and be grateful I still manage to fall back into hating the ordinary and wishing for the extraordinary. The next thing I know, I’m feeling weak, insecure and lacking confidence because my life appears to not measure up to the “extraordinary”.

But take heart my friends, because I found scripture that will shed light on the ordinary and help us push through!

“So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to preserve so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.” Hebrews 10:35-36

Will you consider shifting your perspective with me? Let’s move from chasing the extraordinary to embracing the ordinary because we have God’s promises waiting for us!

How would your life be different if you embraced the ordinary? I love hearing from you. Let me know your thought in the comments below.

The Pressure to “Be Someone”

ljkidphoto2

Do you ever catch yourself feeling insignificant?

As I was talking with a close friend on the phone several weeks ago I uttered these words, “I’m learning to accept me right where I am today. No matter if I live another day on this earth, I am enough right where I am, right in this moment.”

It was like a breath of fresh air washed over my soul.

Ahhhhh….what a relief to accept myself for who I am today. Thank you Jesus!

From my very first childhood memory I had expectations to “be someone”. I never identified clearly what that “someone” was supposed to do or who she was suppose to be, but it’s always lingered over me.

For goodness sakes, we live in a world that screams being famous or onstage means you are “someone” of significance.

I’ve struggled my entire life with feeling unworthy. I’ve never truly felt good enough…whatever good enough is?

Four years ago as I awoke from a month-long coma to find out I had been miraculous healed, it was too much to bare. Honestly it’s taken every bit of four years for me to wrap my brain around God’s love and grace for my life.

As I move forward in the calling He has placed on my soul, I find myself juggling authenticity and significance.

I’m learning and starting to accept that I am significant, pure, holy, loving, precious and worthy in His sight.

The need to “be someone” is an outright lie from the enemy. There’s only one person that needs to “be someone” in our lives and that is Jesus Christ.

I want to encourage you today, that YOU ARE SOMEONE, that you too are significant, pure, holy, loving, precious and worthy in Christ.

I invite you to change your perspective with me.

Have you been trying to “be someone” and yet just ended up with feelings of emptiness? We are not in this alone. I would love to hear your thoughts today. Leave me a comment below.

You Can Still Finish Strong this Year

Long before daylight my alarm blares, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough…” The words of the song strike me as ironic because right now ANY mountain feels too high except the pile of blankets on top of me. I’ve committed to do a 50-mile bike race with my husband. What could I possibly have been thinking?

He’s already up and jumping around the room like a kid on Christmas morning. He flips on the light and begins to gather my gear. He tosses me spandex shorts to replace my comfy pajamas. Again, “WHAT am I thinking?”

All the way to the starting line I imagine everything that could go wrong. I could have a wreck. Get dehydrated. Run into a cow–and I really like cows. So sad. It’s too early for my thoughts to be entirely rational. All I really know is that I feel FEAR. Spine tingling, mind-spinning, I-think-I-will-throw-up-now fear.

I’m doing the race with my fabulous friend named Trish (my awesome husband has signed up for 100 miles–even longer than what I’m doing). Before we begin I make Trish promise to take care of me while I cling to my handlebars like a toddler with a security blanket.

Then we’re off. And something really remarkable happens.

I don’t die.

Instead I pedal.

One mile at a time.

Until we get to the first stop on the route. They have cookies. And suddenly I realize I just might be okay.

So I pedal again.

Then some more.

And before I know it, I’m on the other side of the finish line holding my free hot dog high in victory. {Yes, free food motivates me. I’m kind of like a circus bear that way.}

Later on as I reflect, I realize I should have seen this ending coming. Because over and over I’ve discovered this: Fear is almost always the hardest part. Yep, even the pedaling is easier than the fear.

And pedaling is also the only way to get through the fear. You can’t make it go away ahead of time. There’s only one permanent cure for fear: the finish line.

You have to cross the finish line of your dream, that challenge, the thing you didn’t think you could ever-ever-ever-do.

Let me lean in and whisper to you as we look at the last few months of this year: you can still finish strong.

Just pedal.

Then pedal some more.

Find a free cookie somewhere.

Never give up.

You have a big God who lives within you.

And there ain’t no mountain high enough to keep him from getting us through.

XOXO

Holley Gerth

Addicted

It seems to me that everybody has some sort of addiction these days. And if you don’t want to call it a full blown out “addiction”, then we all have some sort of vice we use. Whether it is Starbucks, work, perfectionism, comfort food, shopping, alcohol or even stress. I came to the conclusion that I’m addicted to the adrenaline stress produces. Honestly, I always thought of those people who do extreme sports or adventures were the only ones classified as “addicted to adrenaline”. However, it’s been brought to my attention that the natural hormone, called epinephrine is released in our bloodstream when we are stressed and this explains why I thrive when operating in a stressed-out mode.

Being an adrenaline junkie is honestly quit embarrassing to admit because I long to be a peaceful content soul who also appears to have it “all together”. The problem here is the fact that I’m striving to be something that I’m not and that is where the stress is created in the first place! So becoming aware of this whole new addiction has forced me to take a step back and examine the truth. Who I really am and whom I’m really living for. This revelation led me to spending some time in my journal writing down my core values and how I can start living a life that honors them.

I would like to invite you today to a little coaching exercise. Take out your journal and write down these questions and spend some time honestly answering them.

• Is there anything I use in my life as a “vice” and if so why?
• Who am I living for?
• What are my core values?
• What can I do to honor my values and myself?

I would love to hear from you! Everyone who comments today will be entered to win a Starbucks gift card! Winner will be announced next Thursday. Congratulations to Kathy Murphy for last weeks drawing for the Mini-Retreat!

Do you need rest?

Have you been overwhelmed, exhausted, discouraged or just down right defeated?  What do you typically do when you feel like God does not hear your prayers?

For me, I would like to say since I’m a “Christian Life Coach” I wait patiently on the Lord and trust He will provide for my every need.  Well that would be a big fat lie!  There are times I go through a cycle that goes something like this.  The problem arises, I run to a friend, process it to death, grab some form of sweet fluffy carbs to eat my troubles away, toss and turn during long sleepless nights and then finally as a last resort go to God in absolute despair.

Why in the world do we put ourselves through such anguish when we can simply turn to Jesus, the Prince of Peace?  My excuse has been, I’m human and my natural tendency is to run in rebellion instead of running to God.  Just last week after fighting and trying to convince God that He did not love me or care about my situation He proved me wrong once again.  He showed up in my weakest hour.  He graced me with His presence and provided hope for me when I could only see darkness.

Isaiah 30:15 reads,

“Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved.  In quietness and confidence is your strength.

When reading about the Israelites in the Old Testament and how they would trust God for a period and then completely disbelieve everything about Him, gives me hope.  Hope to know that even though I question God and rebel at times, He remains the same no matter what I think or how I feel.

I would like to encourage you today that no matter what you think or feel about God and the trials you go through just be real with Him.  Tell Him when you don’t believe in Him.  Tell Him when you doubt His goodness in your life.  Ask Him to forgive your disbelief.  Once we are completely real with God, that’s when we find rest.  That’s when we find quietness in our souls and become confident of who God says He is.

Leave a comment today in the link below about your times of disbelief and how God proved Himself to you.

#Blessed

I’m currently teaching and participating in the Stressed-Less Living Online Bible Study with Melissa Taylor.  I almost feel like it’s a joke that this is the book we are studying right now because I’ve been put to the test with some major stress just within the last week.  From losing our precious 20-year-old cousin to Cystic Fibrosis, facing heart-breaking challenges with my adolescent daughter, to personally overcoming some health matters the word STRESS has defiantly been in my vocabulary quit often lately.  After reading Chapter 1 of this incredible book Stressed-Less Living, I discovered when I put complete trust and faith in God, I do have the power to live less stressed!  So today I wanted to share with you what I did just this week to overcome my personal stress.  It’s quit simple.  I just speak out loud everything I am blessed with! For example:

I’m blessed to be alive.

I’m blessed to breath on my own. *this is one of my favorites…no more trachea by the grace of God alone!

I’m blessed to be a wife, mom, sister, daughter, and friend.

I’m blessed to have a home, clothing, food, water, and transportation.

I’m blessed to have the bible that speaks life into me every day.

I’m blessed to have eyes that see and ears that hear.

I’m blessed to have a second chance at life.

I’m blessed to spend time with loved ones.

I’m blessed to connect with others all over the world through technology.

Honestly the list could go on and on forever.  The reason this simple exercise works so well to relieve stress is because we immediately experience freedom from the truth! Leave a comment on the link below and share what you are blessed with while reducing stress in your very own life today!

Blessed to Coach women around the world at www.lindakuhar.com!
