Are “they” Really That Important?

girlinfield

What will “they” think?

Will “they” like me?

Will “they” approve of me?

Will “they” reject me?

Will “they” love me?

Will “they” hate me?

Will “they” agree with me?

Will “they” disagree with me?

“They” can keep me up at night, tossing and turning, trying to figure out what “they” think.

Every time that darn insecurity bug bites me it sends me into the crazy land of “they”.

Obsessing over what “they” think about me.

Have you ever struggled with such ridiculous thinking?

A few weeks ago when I was talking with my therapist (and yes I have a therapist and a life coach … there’s a big difference between the two) I came up with a great idea on how to protect myself from being consumed with “they”, aka other people’s opinions about me.

Sitting on her big comfy couch my therapist asked me to describe who I was. Not who everyone else says I am, but who I truly am as a 40-year old woman.

As tears trickled down my cheeks I could feel myself becoming lighter, more vibrate, and full of life as I expressed the beautiful unique person that God created.

I am compassionate, loving, strong, courageous, beautiful, giving …

As I expressed the truth from my heart I envisioned all the opinions of others bouncing off of me.

All opinions, all words … good, bad, indifferent, kind, mean, shocking, thoughtful …. None of the words were able to land on me. They just bounced off of me.

Instead of allowing those words to penetrate my soul and take root, I was filled with who God says I am, the absolute pure truth.

I decided that day that those are the only words that are allowed to consume me. I don’t need words to puff my ego up and tell me how good I am and I certainly don’t need words to tear me down.

Now I’m not saying we should not receive words of love and compassion from others. By all means we are made for relationship and expressing thoughtful words to one another. This is part of the beautiful gift of life we live.

What I am saying is that we must guard our hearts before allowing anything to come in. Make sure the words that are spoken align with who God says we are before opening ourselves up to every thought, word, or opinion that comes our way.

Proverbs 4:32 says it beautifully, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it”.

Have you struggled with opinions from others before? I would love to hear from you in the comments below. Everyone who comments will be entered to WIN a special devotional book from Lysa TerKeurst, What Happens When Women Say Yes to God. Winner announced Feb. 28.

Journal with God: Write in your journal all the words that have been hurting your heart. Maybe even the people who have said those words to you. Then ask God to reveal His truth to you. Write down who God says’ you are, the beautiful truth.

How Your Core Values Keep You Accountable {and a giveaway!}

It’s so exciting to see how great everyone is doing on accountability this month. I love hearing from you. Thank you for all your emails. Your motivation keeps me motivated!

On a recent blog post I wrote, “Accountability oozes from our core values”. For example one of my core values is honesty. Because honesty is a core value of mine, when I tell someone I will do something, that means I will do it. That is why accountability works when it’s connected to my core values.

There are hundreds of core values. I would love to hear what your core values are in the comments below. Everyone who comments will be entered to WIN a special devotional book from Lysa TerKeurst, What Happens When Women Say Yes to God. Winner announced Feb. 28.

Here’s a list of core values to select from (but not limited to): Love, Obedience, Patience, Quality, Security, Inspiring Others, Family, Accomplishment, Trust, Recognition, Peace, Mentoring, Wellness, Loyalty, Service, Honesty, Humor, Integrity, Faith, Fun, Respect, Persistence, Community, Creativity, Encouragement, Order, Nurturing, Excellence, Courage, Honor, Joy, Authenticity, Elegance.

Journal with God: Write in your journal all of your core values. Reflect on the many ways God has used these values throughout your life as a gift to you and to serve others.

One Easy Way to Finish What You Started

1 Thessalonians 5:11 tells us, therefore encourage one another and build one another up.

How I Used Being Embarrassed To My Advantage

embarrass

Hot flushed face. Sweaty palms. Shaky voice. Embarrassment.

We’ve all been there. Whether we did it to ourselves or someone else is to blame.

Isn’t it the worst?

We do everything in our power to avoid feeling embarrassed. Whether it’s making sure we are not the only one walking into the party alone or giving excuses as to why Susie Q is dressed the way she is.

Just thinking about being embarrassed for half a second makes my stomach churn.

But what if we could use embarrassment to our advantage?

When I was training for my very first half-marathon with Team In Training, I learned how embarrassment could actually become my friend instead of that dreadful nemesis.

I was committed to raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphomas Society so I asked for donations from all my friends and family to support me.

After sending out a ton of letters I realized there was no turning back. I was stuck! I had to follow through with my commitment; otherwise I was going to be completely embarrassed.

No matter how tuff training got I refused to give up. People had donated money to support me. My hands were tied. There was no way, no how I was going to be a quitter. I wanted to honor my word and of course their money!

By putting myself out there, to the point of embarrassment actually worked to my advantage. It kept me motivated. It kept me accountable. And procrastination was nowhere on the radar.

From this experience I learned a simple tool that keeps me accountable today.

Social accountability.

When I really want to achieve a goal, I will put myself out there every time. I will announce it to the world, even though it makes me want to throw up at first!

But hey, it works! It keeps me accountable.

Social accountability pushes me out of my comfort zone and soaring into great results.

I want to challenge you today friend.

What goal are you ready to achieve? You know the one that makes you a little queasy when you think about it.

I’d love to hear about it. Everyone who comments will be entered to WIN a special devotional book from Lysa TerKeurst, What Happens When Women Say Yes to God.
