A Simple Way To Study The Bible

Currently I’m taking a class on How to Study the Bible in my KINEO Ministry Training Class. One easy method I’ve used for years is the devotional method. This method is the first one taught in Rick Warren’s Bible Study Methods, Twelve Ways You Can Unlock God’s Word book. Reading and studying the Bible can be intimidating to many believers. As a Christian life coach, I pray that I can help break down those walls of intimidation and bring an excitement and hunger for everyone to get into God’s word daily.

Okay, so the devotional method is super easy! Be sure to check out Rick Warren’s book to go deeper into this method but for today I want to give you an example of what I like to do.

First, I grab my journal, write the date and pray for the Holy Spirit to guide me and speak to me through God’s word.

Next, I find scripture that speaks to me.

Where do I find scripture to read you might ask? You may be reading a devotional book with suggested bible reading, you may have a bible reading plan you’re following, or you may have scripture your pastor taught on this week and you’re looking it up. These are just a few places I get scripture from.

Once I find the verse(s) that I’m drawn to, I write it in my journal. Today I found these verses as I was reading through my bible reading plan for my KINEO class. As I looked up the cross-reference scriptures (noted at the bottom of the page in my Bible) I came across this passage that jumped off the page to me. Ex. “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” 1 Peter 2:9-10

Next I meditate on the verse(s). I read it over and over. Rick Warren says, “Meditation is essentially thought digestion.” As I read it over and over, I process what the scripture means to me through journaling. I might paraphrase the passage, personalize it or write down what it’s teaching me. Ex. Linda, you are chosen, you are a royal priesthood, you are holy, you belong to God. I praise you God because you called me out of darkness into the light, into your truth. Your truth is that I am chosen. I am royalty. I am holy. I belong to you. Once I was no one, but now I am someone! I am your daughter. I have now received your mercy! Thank you, Jesus for your blood shed on the cross. Thank you, God, for having mercy on me, on my sin. Your mercy removes my misery. I do not have to live feeling miserable because your mercy has covered me. Your mercy frees me.

Then I write out how I will apply this to my life. The revelation of the scripture must be lived out. No application of the Word is like we never read it. Ex. Recently I felt overlooked by three different people in my life that are very important to me. When feelings hit me that I’m not important or I don’t matter to others, I will remember this truth. I am chosen. Also, there are times lately when I’ve felt really bad for not remaining disciplined and following through in areas I know I need to change. Because of this scripture I refuse to agree with condemning thoughts of not being “perfect”, instead I will thank God for His mercy! I no longer have to agree with miserable condemning thoughts, but instead I praise Jesus for mercy!

Finally, I will memorize the verse or a key phrase. In order to live out the Word we need to know the Word. I’ve not spent much time on memorizing scripture word for word (even though that is a goal of mine), however I do have key words and phrases that bubble up in my spirit that I often recall. Ex. I am chosen, I am royalty, I belong. You called me out of darkness and I have received your mercy!

Now if you are reading this, I challenge you to grab your calendar and schedule a 20-minute block of time to practice what you just read or shutting down your electronic device now and do it immediately. Studying the bible will not happen unless you plan too. In order to have an intimate relationship with Christ we must be in His Word. We must know His Word. God tells us in in Hosea 4:6 “my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge”. The truth is the more we know God’s Word, the more we know about ourselves, who we truly are, and that brings an undeniable confidence that cannot be shaken. As Pastor Todd Smith from the North Georgia Revival told me the day I met him, “GET INTO THE WORD”. It will change your life.

One Healthy Habit that Changed My Life

As a 42-year-old woman I can honestly say I’ve spent at least half of my life or more attempting to find ways to be “healthy”. Like most people I start something new and think I’m going to stick with it this time and then fall off the wagon at some point and find myself at square one all over again.

On top of all the try again stop again yo-yoing; I end up feeling bad about myself while negative self-talk and defeating thoughts begin to weigh me down.

Can you relate?

But something dawned on my recently after a spiritual retreat I hosted. For the last twenty plus years I’ve practiced one healthy habit through ever trial, heartache, triumph and victory that has consistently brought me to better health. And with this practice I can honestly say I would not be the person I am today without it. It’s something that I don’t do every single day of my life, but it is something I reach for in times of deep struggle, frustration, anxiety and in times of reflection, hope, prayer, planning and dreaming.

The one healthy habit that continues to change my life and has for years is journaling.

There is no specific way to journal, it’s simply picking up a pen and putting it to paper. It can be one word or hundreds of words. You simply let your heart, mind and emotions lead you. I want to encourage you that even if you’re someone who does not like to write, you must give it a try!

I promise this is one new healthy habit that will propel you forward beyond anything you can imagine. Grab a journal and pen today!

I would love to hear from you. Leave me a comment and let me know one of your healthy habits.

Video: How To Pray

A Simple Daily Prayer

Holy Spirit move through all our hearts.

Move in the hearts of those sick and hurting.
Move in the hearts of those in hospital beds and waiting rooms.
Move in the hearts of our nations leaders, our children’s schools, our marriages, our families and our friendships.

You are a God of peace, order and unity not anger, chaos and division.

Your word says, “I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that my Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.” John 14:13-14 As long as our prayers our in alignment with your will Heavenly Father it will be done. Thank you Lord.

Lord, I pray in the name of Jesus for a movement of love and peace, a love that is found through Jesus Christ alone. I’m praying for millions of salvations worldwide and an unquenchable thirst for your holy word, to know it, believe it and live it. Holy Spirit fill us each and every day. We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Look at what YOU did for me!

Is being too tired a good excuse not to follow through on your goals?

I really wanted to use that excuse this week. But when I thought about my desired outcome to feel great when I run my half marathon I decided to push through my resistance.

But then, even in the middle of pushing through, I started thinking about ways to cut corners the next day! Have you ever done that?

Extra accountability is what I needed this week! So I stepped it up. I made a commitment to video and let you know when I completed my next goal (4 mile run).

I want to say a big THANK YOU to my blog community for watching this and my friend Stephanie for running with me because I would have totally cheated myself and ran fewer miles. Confession: I get lazy and I like to cut corners 🙂

Let me know who is keeping you accountable in your goal? Do you need to step up your accountability to make sure you follow through? Everyone who comments will be entered to win a copy of The Mended Heart by Suzanne Eller.

What’s Respect Got To Do With Healthy Eating?

In my blog post 7 Simple Truths to Accountability {that will hit you in the gut} Simple Truth 3 states: Accountability shows respect towards others, and you are honoring yourself with self-respect when exercising accountability.

Why is it so important to respect yourself?

Over the years I’ve learned that you cannot give away what you do not have. So the more you respect yourself, the more respect you can give away to others.

One of my core values is to respect God first. Romans 12:1 tells us to offer our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God. This is your spiritual act of worship.

So how do we offer ourselves as living sacrifices? One way I’ve learned how to do that is by eating healthy, exercising and taking care of myself. This is honoring to God. I don’t claim to do it perfectly. Many times I mess it all up. But then there are days when I seem to get it right.

My prayer today is that each one of us would have a deep longing desire to respect God first with our lives. Leave a comment and share how you will honor God with your life today?

7 Simple Truths to Accountability {that will hit you in the gut}

Almost five years ago I learned one of the most valuable lesson of my life.

Every time I think about it I almost have to catch my breath. This lesson lives within the central core of my beliefs, deep in my heart, permanently etched on my mind.

Just five months fresh off of life support and three months out of radiation I joined Team In Training with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to run my very first half marathon. It was thrilling to think about getting my body back into shape after the hell it had been through the previous year with chemotherapy, antibiotics, steroids, paralytics, and many more drugs.

I had no idea how in the world I was going to achieve such an enormous goal, 13.1 miles. But looking back I now see the unique thread that brought this dream of mine to fruition.

accountability

I did not understand then what I am fully aware of now.

Accountability works!

Anytime I set out to achieve a goal or even the slightest lifestyle change, the guaranteed formula for a successful result is staying accountable!

Here are 7 Simple Truths to Accountability that will give you a little gut check on why we must invest in accountability.

1) If we want to grow and make a lasting difference in our life we must maintain accountability. It is vital.

2) Accountability means showing up for yourself – living your best possible life right now, today!

3) Accountability shows respect towards others, and you are honoring yourself with self-respect when exercising accountability.

4) Accountability oozes from your core values, your character. Integrity. Honesty. Beliefs. Truths. Standards.

5) Accountability means you are stepping up to the plate and taking responsibility for yourself. There’s no more room for excuses, for blame or for a lack of better words laziness.

6) We are accountable for how we spend our time. We all get 24 hours a day, no one gets more, and no one gets less. It’s our choice how we choose to spend it.

7) And finally accountability and procrastination do not occupy the same space. Which one do you choose to partner with?

Starting February 1st I am offering a FREE 28 Day Accountability Group. This group will be a small community to support and encourage one another. We will grow and learn from each other while moving towards our individual goals. It’s an opportunity to invest in ourselves. If you would like to join us, click here to sign up. Please invite your friends and share on your social media sites. Don’t crumble up and throw away your 2015 goals yet if you’ve fallen off the wagon because together we can make them happen!

Leave a comment today and let me know if you’ve joined the group and what you are most excited about over the next 28 days!
